Why Did Blackwater USA Mercenaries Kill Iraqi Civilians?

If I may be profane, WTF happened the other day with Blackwater!?  Twenty Iraqis are dead, and dozens injured. A preliminary investigation by the Iraqi Government found that Blackwater's mercenaries fired first, in an area packed with civilians, including children.

The Iraqi Government has had enough, and wants Blackwater out. The company has a terrible record regarding treatment of civilians and respect for the rule of law, but the US Government relies on Blackwater mercenary protection for its employees when they venture beyond the gates of the Green Zone.

We'll see what happens.

Originally, Larry Johnson (former CIA) guessed in a blog that nothing would be done about Blackwater because they have a contract with the US government: they cannot be thrown out from or tried in Iraq unless the US government is also thrown out or they break the contract with Blackwater.

However, Johnson forgot about the fact that US courts could try Blackwater from here, which the News and Observer newspaper from Raleigh, NC recently reported may be underway. Despite the weight of the military-industrial complex, public outcry about this event has increased to a level that outweighs that leverage.
